Protecting Your Home While on Vacation
Protecting Your House While on Vacation
With the kids out of school for the summer, it’s the perfect time to plan a family vacation. While checking off your packing list, it’s important to make sure that you take the time to protect your home while you’re away. Keep these home security tips in mind while on vacation this season.
Put a hold on your mail – ask the post office to hold your mail while you’re gone so that it doesn’t pile up in your mailbox. If you have a daily newspaper delivery, put a hold on it while you’re away.
Ask a neighbor – If you can’t find anyone to stay at your house while you’re on vacation, ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home. If they see anything suspicious going on, ask them to call the police.
Turn on lights – if burglars aren’t able to hide in the shadows, they’re less liely to break into your house. Install sensor lights around the exterior of your home and put timers on some of the lights inside your house to make it look like someone is home.
Unplug – except for your necessary appliances, such as your refrigerator, and your lights on timers, unplug anything that doesn’t need to stay plugged in, including your computer and TV. If there’s a power surge while you’re away, unplugging your electronics can help to ensure that they’re not damaged.
Most importantly, look over your homeowners insurance policy to make sure that it’s providing the right amount of coverage in case of a burglary. Contact your friends at Apollo Insurance Services at 800.426.1088 for a complimentary insurance review.
