Fire Prevention Week - October 9th

October is usually the beginning of our wildfire season here in California due to the hot weather, winds and dry vegetation. We've already witnessed a huge wildfire in the Anaheim/Corona area which caused damage to thousands of acres of land but thanks to the efforts of brave firefighters no homes or lives were lost. Let's keep in the mind that we're the first line of defense against wildfires. Here are some important tips in preventing and responding to wildfires.

To Help Prevent a Wildfire

·         Never leave a fire unattended. Completely extinguish any fires by dousing with water and mixing around the ashes before you leave.

·         Don't throw matches, cigarettes or other smoking materials from your moving vehicle. Make sure that all matches and cigarettes are completely extinguished before you throw them away.

·         Be mindful when operating equipment outdoors that can create heat or sparks

·         Speak up and alert authorities if you suspect someone is in danger of starting a wildfire

If You Have to Evacuate:

·         Once you are advised to evacuate, do so as soon as possible.

·         Always know your evacuation routes ahead of time so that you won't have to scramble to find a way out.

·         Wear protective clothing and footwear when evacuating to protect yourself from flying ashes and sparks.

·         Make sure that there is no combustible materials in your yard before you leave, including yard waste, firewood, fuel cans and grills.

·         Prevent any drafts into your house by closing vents, windows and doors.
